The arrival in Australia of two Spaniards was the excuse to assemble a stellar line-up of Australian musicians at The Tote over the two nights. Gorka Munster and Juan Ittararte have a passionate love for underground Australian rock music and established Bang! Records issuing high quality vinyl releases of Australian artists such as Spencer P Jones, Ian Rilen, Beasts of Bourbon, Bored, Penny Ikinger, The Scientists and many more. This has been a labour of love and has laid the ground work for many Australian performers the opportunity to tour throughout Europe on a regular basis.

So when Gorka and Juan headed to Australia a stable of their artists put on a two night party at the home of Melbourne rock n roll, The Tote.

Friday night was headlined by Kim Salmon & The Surrealists – they took the crowd on a rock n roll journey from the avante-gard through to full throttle rock!

Also on the bill were the Sacred Cowboys, who rarely play as Gary Gray has been based in France for many years – the Cowboys were in fine form breathing life into gems of songs such as Twisted Nerve and Nothing Grows in Texas.

A highlight of the night was the Seminal Rats coming out of retirement to rattle through a blistering set of high octane rock’n'roll. They filled the Cobra Room to the brim and there was literally sweat dripping from the walls. They were followed up by Bored! – the with many patrons missing out as it was impossible to cram any more bodies into the limited space.

Others on the bill who rounded out the evening were The Meanies, Green Mist, Stu Thomas and Leadfinger.

A mighty fine night of rock n roll! Salut!

Ever wished you could have been there when Hendrix and Dylan used to jam at NY’s Café Wha? Or witnessed Otis Redding as he blew all the flower power

people out of their minds at Monterey Pop Festival in ‘67? Or been at The Falls in 2003 when G-Love’s bass-player broke out into Sly and

The Family Stone’s ‘Family Affair’? Never fear, with The Falls opening on the 29th of December this year, you can be there for the whole show.

To open the festival in Lorne come spectacular performances from: Those Seattleites lauded by MOJO as ‘America‘s next great band’, come the ghostly melodic

interludes of Fleet Foxes* (USA); darlings of the Oz music scene, the captivating Augie March; UK’s cult-indie rockers Q Magazine labelled as ‘The biggest cult band in

the UKThe Cribs (UK); Electro-synth surveyors of new age-mayhem Late Of The Pier (UK); turntablism prodigy A-Trak (Canada); the return of powerhouse rockers

Rocket Science; bluesman Ash Grunwald*; the wailing and energetic British India; 9-piece Latin hip-hop troupe Labjacd and the stunning vocals from TinPan Orange

(*denotes acts also playing Tas; all others playing Lorne on the 29th Dec only).

And to kick of 2008’s proceedings, for the first time in Marion Bay, we proudly present to you

The Falls Funk’n’Soul Revue; a hip-happenin’ bayside hustle. An afternoon and evening of this country’s finest funk, soul, bossa-nova & boogaloo from the very best

specialist DJ’s this country has to offer. Spinning the platters that matter; vintage 45’s all the way from the Deep South of the US of A all the way to the deep dwellings of

the Apple Isle, for a go-go dancin’, hip shakin’, soul groovin’ par-tay. Once you’ve given your tail feather a good ole’ shake, kick your dancin’ shoes off and relax from

dark ‘til late in front of Films in the Field, or venture off for a whimsical adventure at the grand opening of The Falls Arts Village.

Both Marion Bay and Lorne will be joined for the rest of the fest by the likes of: Franz Ferdinand(UK); The Hives (Sweden); Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed & The True Loves

(USA); The Cat Empire; The Kooks (UK); The Grates; Gomez (UK); Tegan & Sara (Canada); Faker; SoKo (France); Donavon Frankenreiter (USA); Jamie Lidell (UK);

TZU; Mystery Jets (UK); Architecture in Helsinki; Atmosphere featuring Brother Ali (USA); The Drones; The Dodo’s (USA); Wolf & Cub & Liam Finn (NZ).

With loads more troves of treasure yet to be revealed!

The Falls Music & Arts Festival: The three day picnic begins on December 29th, 2008 along the beautiful coastlines of Lorne, Victoria and Marion Bay,

Tasmania as it celebrates its sweet 16th birthday in Vic and its 6th year running in Tas.

Tickets: There are limited full festival tickets available, plus a capped amount of two day tickets, check website for details. We’ll be emailing lucky ticket ballot

subscribers their purchase tokens from September 1st – so check your inbox. All remaining tickets go on sale 9am September 9th.

Darlings of this year’s SXSW festival and lauded by Mojo as ‘America‘s next great band’, Seattle five-piece Fleet Foxes’ music is something that has had us all

mesmerised with their ‘baroque harmonic pop jams’ that effortlessly build up in layers of vocals and instrumentation that surges, mellows and surges again in waves

of harmony. Their melodies are, like all great pop; simultaneously familiar and unique, sounding like they’ve just fallen from the sky, and utterly unashamed of beauty.

They conjure an imaginary lost world of sound and unknown instruments in their lovely, folky, ghostly a capella gospel-tinged sing-songs that make you want to board the

ship and sail yourself there. (playing Vic & Tas) www.myspace.com/fleetfoxes

Prolific band Augie March’s brand of smart folk, lead by Australia’s tight-packed pop-poet, Glenn Richards, have been buried in the studio recording, what we’ve

been tipped is, their finest work yet. After their profoundly beautiful Moo, You Bloody Choir, it’s difficult to imagine. Brilliant and wrenching, this five piece always

manage to pull out all the stops live, littering their sets with their classic rock’n’roll harmonies and swing jazz rhythms that tend to slow-burn into a combustion

of raw pop-sensibilities and emotion.

The siblings Jarmon, better known as The Cribs, were labelled earlier this year by Q Magazine as ‘The biggest cult band in the UK’. This is however a line these

cheeky chaps are unlikely to advertise – they don’t pander to music’s mainstream expectations, and are fiercely independent with a DIY attitude. They play contagious

driving bass, dirty, rollicking guitar tracks that are packed-full o’ indie pop lo-fi goodness. Joining the Jarmon brothers is ex Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who joined

the lads early this year to become a fully fledged Cribs member. Known well for their raucous, unpredictable live shows usually packed to the rafters with their fanatical

followers, we’re more than chuffed to have their shambolic, spiky tuned post punk paraphernalia on our shores.

It’s time to hail the new age of anything-goes-ridiculousness as those nu-synth-pop pioneers Late Of The Pier perform their ludicrousness par excellence. Glam indie

at its finest, the quartet has proved to be much more than skinny jean wearing indie electro fiends – but savvy syncopated 80’s electro synth surveyors. Off the back

of their album Fantasy Black Channel LOTP will bring, for the first time to our shores, their full-hearted, straight-faced, disco-romp that is one multi-layered space

pop beast whose extracurricular activity is to indulge in aggressive exuberance of free-wheelin’ fun.

No longer is it a crime to mish-mash hip hop acapella into a techno track. A-Trak leads the pack as he rides the line between hip hop and electronic beats in a

refreshing hybrid of everything ass-shaking! His mix taped madness proves he is great – if not a turntablism prodigy. The call has been made to make the party

dance – and A-Trak will dutifully and extraordinarily do so with his trademark eclectic beats. www.djatrak.com + www.myspace.com/djatrak

Hallelujah! Rocket Science are back. It’s been far too long between drinks, and we’re delighted about the return of the men possessed by the spirit of rock’n’roll.

Having recently been received back into the Melbourne music scene with a smile and a firm handshake, we welcome them back like a long lost friend, as they return

to the stages for their 5th Falls Festival. Still firmly engaging their fat rock sound, Rocket Science continue to push out countless and relentless riffs, licks and slick

chords illuminated by their trademark sound of Rhodes keys and kit-driven garage rock punctuated by theremin oddities. Having retained their outrageously fun live

show and wholly excellent material, Rocket Science are storming into our hearts once again, better than ever. www.myspace.com/rocketsciencerock

The man with charisma and a constant smile brings his melting pot of soulful blues accompanied by his guitar and gospel-style vocals to The Falls. Born to an

African mother and Australian father, Ash Grunwald grew up listening to classic bluesmen like Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and then later BB King, James Brown

and Jimi Hendrix who have all inspired what has become his signature eclectic style. With an Album Of The Year from the Australian Blues Awards under his belt,

and guitar securely under his arm, Ash’s unique, heartfelt stormer of a live show is full of passionate beats and infectious rhythms which is sure to unleash impromptu

funky moves from the crowd. (Playing Vic & Tas) www.ashgrunwald.com + www.myspace.com/ashgrunwald

Having released two studio albums within the space of 12 months (including the highly acclaimed sophomore album Thieves) and gigging the country from north

to south, east to west, the youthfully exuberant lads from garage rock quartet British India have been busy. Having been referred to as ‘Indie Champions’ and

well known as performing live burly shows that don’t disappoint British India are so full of energy and dynamism it is highly possible that they may literally blow the

roof off The Falls stage with their trademark whining and wailing guitar notes filling the air. www.myspace.com/britishindia

Influenced by the three vocalists' Chilean heritage, and infusing everything from old school hip-hop and jazz to Cuban salsa and even Andean folk music,
Labjacd (pronounced lab-jacked)  is a 9-piece Latin hip-hop outfit based in Melbourne. Dishing up pulsing rhythms and unleashing energy that orders you to
dance, it is little wonder that they’ve been described as "one of the best live acts in the country" by Rolling Stone magazine. Formed in 2004, Labjacd released
their first full length album Vote With Your Feet with the assistance of John Butlers JB Seed Program. www.myspace.com/labjacd

TinPan Orange, headed by brother-and-sister duo Jesse and Emily Lubitz, are a unique sounding vessel that chugs through the calm waters of melodic virtue.

Their perfect recipe incorporates acoustic guitars, violin, and mandolin lead by quirky lyrics delivered from a voice that has been likened to ‘pure, unpolished silver’.

The popular trio has been travelling the country performing their blend of profound perceptions and musical insights of the poetics of the everyday and uncanny and

has been picked up with gusto by radio stations across the great divide. www.tinpanorange.com + www.myspace.com/tinpanorange

The Drones were their usual cathartic, thunder and lightning best. The new songs from their album out next month sounded strong, while they still manage to find new light within their older songs. “They’re a pretty intense little band,” remarked a punter standing next to me. That was the understatement of the day so far.”

Richard Kingsmill – TRIPLEJ

After a blistering performance at Splendour In The Grass, The Drones jumped a jet plane relocating to the USA for two months. A tour with the likes of Built To Spill and The Meat Puppets and a special trip east side to hit the stage at the infamous All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in New York what a perfect way to warm up for the release of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, Havilah, due in store September 20th 2008.

When they return home in October, The Drones will be joined by a number of special guests as they embark on a national tour to show off their new creation.

Havilah will be in store September 20th 2008, through ATP Recordings and MGM Distribution.

To celebrate their brand new album Playtime for John Mountain (released 23 August via Sensory Projects), The Rectifiers play their first show in quite a while alongside Legends Of Motorsport’s wonderful Richard ‘Lightbulb’ Fyshwick at The Tote, Saturday 30 August. The show is part of Sir Richard’s solo residency and features stripped up and down songsmithery in the mood of Kelley Stoltz, Clawhammer, and the Legends. Be sure to arrive at The Tote by five pm to secure a comfortable piece of floor space.
The Rectifiers album launch is coming up on Friday September 19 @ Northcote Social Club with Sly Hats + special guest to be announced. The Rectifiers will also play the Darebin Music Festival at Wesley Anne on September 7.
Five years on from the hugely acclaimed Wear The Weight Of The Resting Sky, Playtime for John Mountain is The Rectifiers’ most ambitious and accomplished work to date and signals the return of one of Melbourne’s most singular and ahead-of-the-curve bands, emboldened with a beatific new musical and lyrical vision.
Put simply, Playtime for John Mountain is a pastoral pop masterpiece. Conceived as the first part of a trilogy, this stunning collection of a dozen cyclical story songs revolves around an internal narrative logic dreamed up by the brothers Volk (Nick Volk: samplers/synths/bass and Jo Volk: guitar/vocals), who remain at the core of the band together with Todd Denham (synths/samplers). Ben Teniswood joins The Rectifiers on drums.
Driven by a desire to avoid the pitfalls of self-referential singer-songwriting, and inspired by the ideals of magic realism, Nick and Jo devised a world of their own making. After the album title came to Nick in a dream, the brothers’ imagination went to work and the parallel cosmos of John Mountain became a setting for the folkloric journey and characters which inhabit these dreamlike songs.
Taking four years from conception to completion, the band’s meticulous recording process yielded a wealth of material which was lovingly cut and pasted to construct Playtime for John Mountain. There were musical touchstones along the way — namely, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies, The Three EPs by The Beta Band, the entire Hank Williams canon and the Fearless Freaks documentary — but fans of The Rectifiers will recognise Playtime for John Mountain as uniquely theirs.
