Wide-eyed young psych-drone duo The Sun Blindness launch their debut album Like Pearly Clouds, a self-proclaimed masterpiece of dreamy psychedelia, druggy, droning landscapes and Beach Boys inflected harmonies, at Northcote Social Club on Friday, September 26.
The outrageously indulgent sounds of The Sun Blindness are seeped in thick layers of psychedelia and classic Sixties West Coast pop. Recorded in Melbourne, mastered by Kramer (Bongwater, and producer of Low), it is a debut that transcends time and the idea of a debut album.
The Sun Blindness will perform for this special occasion with an expanded line-up of two guitars, keyboard, bass and drums.
Support comes from one of Australia’s finest psych outfits, The Laurels from Sydney, plus upcoming Mornington Peninsula trippers The Ovals.
Tickets: $10+bf available from NSC Box Office, phone 9486 1677 or http://northcotesocialclub.com .
ABOUT THE SUN BLINDNESS
On the cusp of dawn 2004, a seemingly coincidental collision of two people suspended in space, supported by stone, bore a thick misted nebula of idea, sound and light to expand and contract in accordance with stellar rhythm and law. Impenetrable despite its translucence, this expansive type occurrence is most commonly referred to as The Sun Blindness.…
The Sun Blindness were formed in late 2004 when singer/guitarist Tor Larsen met guitarist Duncan Eastey while working the night shift at a local supermarket in Melbourne, Australia. Sharing a love and appreciation of psychedelic music and culture, they began to get together in the mornings to play together and write songs, informed primarily by the droning space-rock of 1980s underground heroes Spacemen 3, the psych-folk of a little known New York based musician called P.G. Six, a secret enthusiasm for The Doors and a treasure trove of strange psychedelic compilations spanning from the 1960s to the 1980s.
With a line up of two electric guitars and one vocal, along with sparse delayed loops coming from guitar pedals, The Sun Blindness have played with a multitude of bands, notably Black Cab, Horse Stories (USA), SIlver Ray, The Laurels (NSW), The Sand Pebbles, Kes Band, Tooth (NSW), Embers, Witch Hats and many more.
In 2006 they journeyed to the Sorrento Music Festival and ended up on the beach at 2am and under the influence of the local mushrooms, decided to record a full length album. Lacking the funds to book a studio, or a label to release them, but full of psychedelically fueled enthusiasm, they decided to record at home on a combination of 4 track machines, old mixing boards and multi-track recording programs. The result was Like Pearly Clouds, a self-proclaimed masterpiece of dreamy psychedelia, druggy, droning landscapes and Beach Boys infected harmonies.
Long before its offical release on Sensory Projects, home made copies were circulated and the album made the rounds on various international psychedelic blogs. American producer Kramer stumbled across it online and was so enthralled that he offered to master it for a reduced fee.
A prominent psych music blog stated:
After hearing the Sun Blindness album I instantly became a drooling fanboy. I’m up at almost 3:30 in the morning compelled to write about this duo. This completely obscure release from Australia quickly rocketed into my top five albums… It recalls, but doesn’t copy, the Spacemen 3 sound circa Playing With Fire. Possibly topping that classic psych band, the Sun Blindness manages to fuse the softer side of Sonic Boom’s drones with the proto-spiritualized sound of Jason Pierce’s songs in a way that the Spacemen were never able to do. – psychedelicobscurities.blogspot.com
The Sun Blindness have appeared on several psychedelic music compilations including London based label Psilocybin Sounds and Australian psych compilations Tomorrow is Today and Burn Your Fingers on the Sun. They are currently recording their next album due in 2009.
